Wedding bands

Went to Fairy's Inc to deposit my engagement ring with them so that they can start working on my wedding band.

When we met Evelyn, she asked if we were excited, I thought she meant our ROM as the dare was getting nearer. In fact, she was about to show us Henry's ring which totally slipped my mind!

His ring really turned out awesome! I could tell that he really liked it very much! Even Evelyn was surprised at the outcome of his ring design.. I wanted to take a picture of it to post on the blog but Henry said we should leave it as a surprise till that day. :)

Next, we spent 10mins to decide on the words we want to engrave on his ring. In the end, we will be engraving "Henry & Flora 24 May 2010" on the inside of his ring which I envisage will turn out beautiful with the rose gold words against the black gold!

In order to safeguard both parties' interests, we verified the GIA no. on the stone against the GIA cert which I brought down to ensure that we are getting back the same stone when the ring is returned to us by end March.

Through their trained eyes, they managed to see the no. engraved on the stone albeit taking a bit of time cos it was not easy to read the no. which has been lasered in white, unlike the usual black colour.

As for us, we spent a good 15 mins, squinting our eyes through the tiny microscope and we only managed to see some engraving but could not make out what they are.

After seeing the end-product of Henry's ring, now I'm certainly looking forward to mine!!

Meeting up with JP

We met up with our JP at Singapore Swimming Club this afternoon for the signing of consent form before we are able to file our marriage on 24 May.

Instead of going to the SSC, we made a blunder and went to Chinese Swimming Club. We felt bad about letting our JP wait for us!

Our JP ran us through on what's going to happen on that day and what we are supposed to say when she asks certain questions during the solemnisation. And, we have decided to personalise our wedding vows! :)

Photographer

We made a trip to Christopher's house to take a look at those photos taken by the recommended photographer - Terry. Apparently, this experienced photographer is highly recommended by Christopher and he will usually be snapped up months in advance.

Henry has already made a booking with him on 24 May for 3 hours, of which he quoted us $300 that includes the development of 120 photos, with all softcopies returned.

Frankly, after looking at those photos that Terry had taken for Christopher's ROM and AD, I found that was not the style of photography I'm looking for. They were simple photos without any effects and were presented with borders added for some selected ones.

I like those photos taken by Joo's photographer on her ROM. Somehow, the photos are able to convey their love story in a fairytale-like manner.

I brought up my concerns about the style I wanted and I have both the guys' assurance that Terry is able to fulfil that provided we give him a clear direction on the photography style.

I feel that photography is one of the most important aspects of a wedding as it captures those special moments and serves as wonderful memories no matter how many years down the road. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed..

Emcee

Let us put our hands together and give a very warm welcome to our emcee of the day........ Ms Audrey Koh!

Yes, Henry has contacted her and she agreed readily! Initially, we were having a headache over this as we wouldn't want our guests to "work" on that day. They were supposed to be there to relax, enjoy and share our joy! We wanted to ask Joanne to be the emcee but she commented that it would not be as personable compared to someone who knows us.

I'm just so glad we have settled another issue of the ROM.

And our humorous emcee proposed the following vows for our consideration:

1. I, Mr Potato, Root Vegetable No. ________________ hereby take Mrs Potato, Root Vegetable No. ______________ as my awfully wedded spud & pledge to take care of her in sickness & in health, to share with her my moist soil home & fertilizer, to enhance her fertility & her chances of conceiving many baby potatoes.

2. With this organic leaf ring, I take thee, Mrs Potato, as my lawfully wedded spud. I will provide thee with the most luxurious & moist soil home, with friendly & colourful carrot, brinjal, onion, turnip & radish neighbours. But I will ensure our privacy when it comes time to make baby spuds. They cannot make too much noise & 闹洞房.

3. I, Mr Potato, Root Vegetable No. _________________ wed Mrs Potato, Root Vegetable No. ________________ as my lawfully wedded spud, & promise to completely & utterly fulfil my spudly duties of producing as many potato offspring as possible.

It was so FUNNY that I had to curb my laughter when I read this in the office! Well written, my dear emcee!

Ok, for those who are puzzled as to who is Mr Potato, due to some long-story reason, it actually refers to Henry. :)

JP

We were informed to contact our JP for her to walk us through the procedure of getting our marriage filed and signing some necessary documents before our ROM.

JP Wong emailed us and there were a few sample vows as well:

Option 1:

In token & pledge, of our constant faith, and abiding love, with this ring, I marry
you.

Option 2:

In sickness, I will nurse you to health.
In health, I will nurture you.
In sadness, I will bring you joy.
In happiness, I will share it with you.
In poverty, I will make our love rich.
In wealth, our love will not grow poor.
When you need encouragement, it will be from me.
When you need a helping hand, it will be mine.
With this ring as a token, I now marry you.

Option 3:

I vow to always keep my love, as pure as it is today.
In your laughter, and your tears, in your sickness and your health.
In your comfort and your fears, in your poverty and your wealth.
I promise to be true to you, I promise to cherish you.
I give this ring, as a token, I now marry you.

Option 4:

I, ...................... , take you ................... , to be my wedded wife/husband, to have & to hold from this day forward, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness & in health, to love & to cherish and to obey as long as we both shall live.

Vow in Mandarin:

Wei le xiang zhen wo liang dui bi ci yong yuan zhong xin, ai qing yong heng, wo jin song ni zhe mei jie zhi, he ni jie hun.

I still remember vividly when my friend posted her wedding vow (Option 1) and their ROM photos on FB and I was moved to tears. Option 1 is sweet and touching but it's not long enough to make the solemnisation memorable.

I like Option 3 & 4. But I would still prefer to personalise my vow if possible. Got to start thinking of what I want to say on that day...

The filing of marriage task was handed to my hubby-to-be cos it was a little complicated to me and I fear I might miss out some important procedures. We are quite excited and looking forward to meet up with our JP now but most likely it would have to be after the CNY.

Songs and photo stands

We have been leaving the ROM preparations hanging in the air for a while due to our busy work schedule and CNY preparations.

I'm starting to get a little worried..

Joanne has sent us the checklist for our ROM but we have yet to reply her and she is currently sourcing for more suitable English songs for us. Here are her suggestions on the number of songs needed based on her expertise:

Bridal march-in (1 song – suggestions: Bridal March by Journey, Canon in D and Theme from Forrest Gump)

Certificate signing (1 song)

Champagne toasting (1 song)

Photo taking (2 songs)

For songs, we need at least 50 to be played throughout the 3-hour event. I believe our KTV king (and myself, of course) will hunt for some nice Mandarin songs!

Joanne has also reverted on the sample image of how we can have our photos displayed in the Living Room.

There will be about 10pcs of this mini photo stand around.

Makeup settled!

30 Jan (Sat) - Fixed an appointment with Edward for rebonding and Henry's haircut.

It's part of my plan to keep the hair long for ROM and after my wedding, I'm going to snip it short!

I showed the picture of the ROM dress to Edward for him to suggest my hairstyle on that day and he commented that the dress is gorgeous! He came up with a hairstyle which I know I would like.

I brought up my concern that the makeup has to be done before the hairstyling and since he can't be at OneRochester to do it, it's either I get the makeup artist over to the salon or I will go the makeup artist's much earlier.

Guess what? He offered to do the makeup for me!!!!! He said if only we trust him enough to do it and of course we do lah! YEAH, another problem solved! We will have both the makeup and hairstyling done at the salon.

I was so happy..... we asked about how much he charges for both services but he said will talk about that nearer the date.

He even gave us a 10% discount on the rebonding and haircut as a pre-ROM "gift". Heehee!

Tailor

29 Jan (Fri) - Went to People's Park alone after work to source for ROM stuff and CNY clothes.

This is really a great place of which I discovered hidden treasures. I managed to find the feathers needed for the dress and a few shops that sell traditional stuff for the customaries.

I went to one of the tailors, showed her the page of my ROM dress and asked for a quote. This fierce and unfriendly auntie gave my $280! Freaking expensive! I suddenly recalled the tailor which the kind Uncle gave me the contacts. Without hesitation, I dialled her number and talked to her for about 10mins!

Yamei auntie said that I could get the satin and chiffon from her or I can choose to buy them myself. I told her that I wanted to buy from the kind Uncle for recommending her to me. After a brief description of the dress I wanted, Yamei auntie told me it will be about $100plus to $200plus.

I will contact her again after CNY and make a trip to her house. Yea, she does the tailoring at her own house. I feel quite comfortable talking to her so I guess she would be a good choice!

Caricature

28 Jan (Thu) - 3rd purchase, caricature!

After enquiring on the cost and details, I sent Mulan, the artist, images of the hand bouquet, ROM dress, our photo and the pose that we prefer.

Here's her quote:

Based on 2 person, color, without background, the price as below:
1) A4 size: $160
2) A3 size: $180
4) Human size (for Standee Purpose): $250

It does not come in hard copy. In fact, high res file will be sent to us and we will have the printing done ourselves. It's more cost effective since we will be printing a few of it.

We went for the A3 size and I must say it was really kind of her to help us in saving the file in A6 size as well. The A3 is meant for the signages whereas A6 is meant invite card printing.

And here's an estimated timeline given to us:
1 March : 1st draft
10 March : Color preview
15 March : High res files to be sent to you after the balance payment been settled.

Transferred $90 to her.

Second expenditure

23 Jan (Sat) - We signed our lives away... Finally, a second expenditure after the purchase of our rings.

After going through and finalising some details in the contract, the die is cast.

Both of us were tired and drained from the 5-day work so we were not really in the mood to have more discussion.

Just briefly touched on the songs of which Joanne will send a selection to us, as well as the various decorations that we want to have for the ROM. Told Joanne that our colour theme will be green & blue to suit the garden concept. Luckily, I showed Joanne the picture of my ROM dress otherwise, she would have chosen a particular decoration of the trellis that would have me camouflaged in it due to its similar flowy design.

Paid 20% deposit for the package.

A sneak peak at the hand bouquet and ROM dress:

I want a simple yet elegant hand bouquet.

I fell in love with this dress the moment I saw it on the magazine!

After OneRochester, we went to People's Park to source for the dress materials and a tailor. After some advice from 2 shop owners, I have decided to get satin, chiffon/ netting!

The cost of the materials only came up to about $50 in total. The kind Uncle got a tailor's contacts for me and said that she specialises in making ROM/wedding dresses.

Stress!

21 Jan (Thu) - It was a pressurizing day at work as well as for the ROM preparations.

Henry got a call from Joanne saying that another couple was looking at the same date - 24 May! If we are keen, we have to be quick in deciding. Everything came in the late morning and it was really frustrating to make a haste decision, especially an important one in your life amid the piling workload.

We pushed the responsibility to each other and nearly came to a quarrel. Not wanting to aggravate the situation further, we both hung up and I volunteered to look through the contract again, clarify some issues with Joanne and make a decision during my lunch time.

I made some changes to the menu once again, not being very satisfied with the food offered to us. Finally, I confirmed with Joanne that we will be meeting her on Saturday to sign the contract.

22 Jan (Fri) - JOanne sent the revised menu to us promptly. This time round, I am rather pleased with the replacements like waldorf salad, chicken kebab, canapes, toffee crumble and more importantly, free flow of Rochester blend coffee and tea for our caffeine-addicted friends and relatives!

Theme & Sourcing for materials

9 Jan (Sat) - In the evening, I racked my brains and came up with a few ideas for the ROM as well as our theme. We will go along the line of a "Sweet Affair @ the Garden". So, everything has got to be related to sweetness. For example, having a honey pot as a ang pow box, that is provided we can find one. We will have some lollipops at the reception table for guests too! The signages and directional signs will adopt the same look and feel of our invite cards.

We are going to have our caricature drawn for the invite cards and I came across the very same artist who did Fann and Christopher Lee's!

16 Jan (Sat) - It was a very, very fruitful day sourcing for the materials needed for ROM!

We went to the following places at Bras Basah:

1. Popular - To source for invite cards material, ideas for guest book. Sms-ed Henry's cousin who is able to help us with the printing. We have decided on a size that is half of A6 for our invite cards and they are going to resemble ice creams - an idea I got from online!

We developed 2 ideas for guest book since we are not going for the conventional one. Idea 1, it would bear similar design as the invite cards and guests will be sticking it somewhere (yet to think of it) after they have filled in their well wishes. Idea 2, we will buy 2 or 3 small but long artist canvas for guests to scribble whatever they want on it. These can be doubled up as "paintings" in our house in the future!

2. Art Friend - To look for materials like ribbons or die-cut shapes for the use on our invite cards and ideas to make our own ang pow box. We plan to showcase something that Henry made of which he gave it to me on a particular anniversary as the ang pow box. This brought us to the next place...

3. Acrylic Centre - We asked for their quote but was told to email them with the dimensions in order for them to quote a price.

Plaza Singapura
4. Made with Love - To look for invite cards materials.

5. Spotlight - Found feathers suitable for my MTM ROM dress and a small tin bucket for lollipops.

Lavender

15 Jan - We went to check out Lavender at The Stamford House after recommendations from Joo and wedding magazines.

They have a wide array of gowns but not really to my liking though. The most important thing is - they are pricey!

Off the list it goes...

Second meet-up at OneRochester

Sorry for the Missing-In-Action! I'm doing so much injustice to my base of avid readers to the extent of receiving their grievances on Facebook! You know who you are, Golf Ball.. Hehe!

In fact we have been in quite a fair bit of action that we were so busy to even update the blog (Ok, I admit laziness played a small part too!).

8 Jan (Fri) - Second meet-up with Joanne, the wedding planner from OneRochester. We scheduled an appointment with her at 6.45pm and the discussion ended at 9pm. We did exchange a few emails before the meet-up and was informed that Joanne will be taking up a new post in 2010.

It got me a little worried cos she was partly the reason we chose OneRochester as we felt assured with her professionalism and experiences in handling ROM/weddings. It was really glad that Henry thought I should brought up this concern with her before the meet-up if not, she would have arranged for us to meet up with the new guy taking over her duties.

I'm just so happy that I did! Joanne felt flattered and overwhelmed to the extent of agreeing to see us through our ROM! YEAH!

And so, we discussed in further details and I asked her about those queries that I jotted down:

- Deposit
- Usage of bridal room
- Ang pow box
- Guest book
- Invite cards
- Wedding favours
- Complimentary parking for guests
- Ring pillow, feather pen
- Hand bouquet
- Display of photos
- Signage and directional signs
- Reception table
- Charges for children

She talked us through the package again and answered our questions patiently. We did also voice out my concern of the high charges as we did not agree the food items given to us was good enough to warrant $80plus per pax! Hence, she would send a breakdown of the costs in terms of the food and decoration for us to get a clearer picture.

Hence, Joanne will coming back to us on the pendings:
1. Revised menu with more "atas" food items
2. Arrangement for food tasting
3. Change of timing from 1pm-4pm to 2pm-5pm. We feel it would be more convenient for people who might who to take half-day leave.
4. Samples of wedding favours. It was advisable that we source on our own as it would not incur service costs.
5. Images of bird cages as ring pillows
6. Concept of displaying photos around The Living Room
7. Choices of songs for both background music and march-in music
8. Breakdown of costs

I have also asked her about adding in a surprise yet romantic element during the champagne toasting session. Shall keep it mum first! Heehee..

More updates to come. Stay tuned!
